Born and raised in Miami, Florida, I am no stranger to endless heat and sunburns. I spent my teen years in Miami playing lacrosse for my high school team as the first string goal-keeper. My passion for the outdoors stretches back as far as I can remember. In junior high, I remember going on a team-building school trip to canoe in the everglades for five days. Alongside my primary nickname, “99.Nathi,” for the endless arsenal of songs I had to entertain my team with, I was also nick-named “psycho,” for my indefatigable determination to keep moving against the currents. Despite this, I have always been the black sheep in my family, who doesn’t care for dirt and sweat as much as I do. Till this day, I cherish that experience as one my first real outdoor adventures and have been seeking new adventures ever since.
When I first started at American University, I decided to join the rowing team and still cherish the perseverance and discipline that it taught me. As a college freshman, I didn’t know much about what I wanted to do other than that I wanted to do something meaningful with my life. I hoped to start down that route by applying to teach English in rural China the following summer, an experience that changed my life forever. Living in a host-family and seeing the conditions in which my students lived in the rural countryside, although humbling and beautiful, was also saddening. The reality was that what was only a month-long, daring experience of teaching abroad for me was a lifetime for them.
Now a senior studying international development and environmental sustainability, I am proud to say that I have a little more orientation in my life than my freshman-self. I spent last spring studying Chinese in Beijing, China and writing for a magazine. This past summer, I led 17 volunteers back to rural China to teach English and to show them what I had seen two years before. I have spent my free time these past few years working for amazing organizations and their worthy causes, such as Learning Enterprises, The Institute for Education, and The World Wildlife Fund. When I am not working or studying, I am biking with my best friend and planning hiking trips for the much-needed weekends. We had been making plans for a biking trip after graduation and I was doing research on routes when I saw a post about Bike & Build on my Facebook from a B&B alumnus. After doing thorough research on the website and learning about B&B’s cause, there was no going back. Not only would this be the most physically and mentally challenging experience I would dare to apply for to date, but I would also have the honor of doing so for a worthy cause. After seeing firsthand the mass gentrification and housing conditions of Miami, Washington, and even China, I am eager to get the chance to pedal forth (or west) and build quality homes for my fellow citizens along the way.
It is easy to get caught up in our own busy worlds and not realize the hardships of those around us. Getting the message across about the lack of affordable housing in this country needs to be communicated in a big and inspiring way, which is why I will be biking across the United States. Despite the likely perpetual aches and pains, water-hose showers, and frustrating fatigue that lay ahead, I cannot wait to get started. Although I am still uncertain about the concept of graduating and my looming transition into adulthood, I am comforted by the thought that I will be starting this new era in my life hitting the ground running (biking?) for a meaningful cause, accompanied by what I suspect will be an inspiring group of people.
This summer of 2016, me and the rest of my Bike & Build team will pedal over Appalachia, traverse the Rockies, and cruise the Midwest’s rolling plains to reach our 15 building destinations spanning from Connecticut to California. Each of us needs to raise money for our building materials. I am asking you to please help me set off on this adventure and build homes for those in need by donating to my page. Any and all donations are immensely appreciated.

Once again Técnica Systems congratulates all of the National Supermarket Association of Florida members for another spectacular Gala. The 5th Annual Gala was celebrated on December 5th, 2015 at the InterContinental Hotel & Resorts with Mardi Gras as a theme.
